The humble database is not so humble; it must drive digital transformation

Long gone are the days where a relational database supported the telco business. It is over a decade since the comfortable, post-paid world of telecoms faced the first wave of digital service providers.

Digital service providers, whose business is not only internet based, but is completely real-time require a different breed of database. Massive amounts of data, which needs to be managed instantly meant that companies such as Facebook had to build their own. Their’s was called Cassandra.

Since then, specialist database vendors and products have blossomed and analysts are now monitoring specialised products that run into the hundreds.

The advent and popularisation of on-demand services has provided further challenges of scale and complexity, none of which should be underestimated.

This database challenge lies at the heart of the set of difficult steps that telcos need to take in order to become digital players. For telcos, digital transformation is not just about culture, or about opening up IT to the business and business partners. While these issues, too, are vital components in the digital journey, the database remains at the core of the business.

To address these issues, MATRIXX Software is hosting a compelling webinar on 5th October. CEO Dave Labuda has been immersed in database technology for most of his career and has been in the forefront of new technologies for telcos for many years. He will, with Matt Aslett of consultancy 451, explain the new and different techniques that are needed for a telco to become a digital player.

To understand the scale of the challenge (and the need to attend the webinar), there are three types of telco data.

The first is the customer data. While complex, this is long lived and is updated periodically.

The second, and newer, requirement is ‘big data’. These are historical records, including billing, which are designed to feed the new analytics requirements for telcos.

The third is transactional data and this is where a telco has to change most drastically from its old version. Real-time, high volume transactions need an engine that can instantly manage balances, usage counters and active offers. This means managing extreme transaction rates, while updating customer and network records concurrently.

Not only that but all of this data must be available to manage campaigns, bundles and provide instant and relevant up-sell opportunities directly through the device.

Even some of the databases that support blindingly fast stock trading situations fall short of the modern telco requirements, as those transactions are serialised. The digital telco has too many dependencies which need to be managed in real-time.
